The turbocharger is an integral part of a ship’s engine as it reuses the exhaust gases in to increase the engines efficiency. On one side, hot exhaust gasses spin the turbine that is connected to another turbine which sucks air in & compresses it into the engine. This compression is what gives the engine the extra power & efficiency because as more air can go in the combustion chamber, more fuel can be added for more power. A wastegate is a valve in between the exhaust intake and the turbocharger bypassing the turbine to control the boost pressure.
